Sooooo - the last pleasure book I remember reading was Harry Potter in England; until yesterday. Dad gave me two of the three books in the Eragon trilogy. I had been reading a couple of chapters a day, but yesterday it got good. I spent most of the day reading and was annoyed at having to do other stuff - eat, go to the bathroom, etc. It is fairly obvious that the young author draws heavily on Tolkein's Lord of the Rings. There are phrases from the ancient language, the Dwarf language, and Urgal (in this volume they fight Urgals instead of Orks). There's a lot of mind-reading and mind games going on. A Dragon Rider melds his mind to the mind of his dragon. This is stuff that you guys will love. I have a copy in hardback if you want to borrow it. I'm going to have to plan another day of reading time to begin the second volume - Eldest. The author is only 21 now. Eragon was published by his family's publishing company, grammar fixed by his mom, edited by his dad, cover art (Saphira, his dragon's eye) photoshopped by his sister. After promoting it to schools, etc. a young man showed it to his dad, who worked for a major publishing company and the rest is history - #1 New York Times Bestseller, #1 Publishers Weekly Bestseller, USA Today Bestseller, Wall Street Journal Bestseller, Book Sense Book of the Year. Ahhh, there's nothing like a summer day and a good book. It reminds me of reading Nancy Drew novels during summer vacation or all the Wizard of Oz series in 6th grade. Sort of delicious intellectual gluttony.
